Holiday Gift Guide 2019

Posted on December 03 2019

Your mother-in-law. Your best friend. Your kid’s teacher. Your favorite fitness instructor. The co-worker who you don’t know well but who’s name you drew for the Secret Santa exchange.  No matter who is on your holiday shopping list, the gift of custom fragrance is sure to please! After all, who doesn't want their world to smell a little better?

We’ve outlined our favorite gift ideas below for every person and scenario - take a look, then stop into your local store to cross off all the names on your list.  And if you don’t live near a store, you can still play Santa Claus and deliver the magic of fragrance through the chimneys (or doorsteps) of all of your loved ones by ordering on our website.  Happy Holidays!

For when you are randomly assigned to Jane from accounting who you barely know for the office holiday gift exchange

Let’s be honest - there are times when gift-giving feels stressful and you just want to give a generic gift card and call it a day. But before you give in and risk being accused of phoning it in by the entire office, consider the gift of custom fragrance. It’s like a gift card, but with a little extra spark!  Bonus: every time Jane burns the custom-scented candle she poured herself, she’ll think of you :)

To give the gift of custom fragrance, simply choose an empty candle jar off our shelf. We’ll wrap it up nicely with a special card that explains the gift, so all you have to do is hand the bag to your lucky recipient (or in Jane’s case, secretly place it on her desk).  No need to worry about selecting the perfect vessel - if Jane would prefer a different one, she can simply trade it in. We recommend placing your jar in a special gift box or organza bag and adding a set of birch coasters. And if you really want to impress, include a gift card to a neighboring restaurant to enjoy lunch or dinner while the candles cool!

If the thought of choosing a jar is too much, don’t worry - we have regular gift cards, too! Giving someone a gift card* to The Candle Lab gives them the opportunity to Experiment with Scent in whichever way they choose.  They can pour a candle, mix their own custom-scented brown sugar body scrub, or even craft a fragrance oil or reed diffuser. If you’re unsure what amount to gift, we recommend viewing our website here for options and pricing.  In general, $20-25 is enough for one person to pour a candle in a jar of their choosing.

*Please not that gift cards purchased online are delivered electronically via email.  If you wish to purchase a traditional plastic gift card, please visit your nearest store

For when you are hosting the in-laws for an entire week

If you are expecting a full house over the holidays, then you know the only way to survive is to get everyone out of the house for at least a few hours. You can ensure this happens by giving everyone the gift of custom fragrance (see above). After everyone opens their gift, you can explain that you made a reservation to pour candles together the next day / later that week / etc!

When it’s time to pour candles, remind everyone to bring their gift, then pile in the car and head to The Candle Lab store of your choice. Everyone will love bonding over making a list of their favorite scents (Uncle Dan love Bacon?!), and each person will work with our Scent Stylists to create their own custom fragrance and pour their own candle. While the candles cool, take the family out for lunch, or set everyone loose in the neighborhood with their holiday spending money. We love the idea of a local white elephant gift exchange - tell everyone to purchase a gift under $10, with the only stipulation that it be purchased from a local business. Maybe you’ll start a new tradition!

For when you are traveling to visit family and want to show your sister how much you miss her

Heading home for the holidays and want to give someone special in your life a gift that says you were really thinking of them? Why not create a custom-scented product that you know they’ll love? It’s the adult version of the gifts you made Mom and Dad when you were a kid, complete with a hand-drawn label that shows just how much you love them.

Pouring them a custom-scented candle is always a winner, but you don’t have to limit yourself to candles. Try making a close friend or your sister a custom-scented body lotion or sugar scrub, or craft a reed diffuser for your father’s study. Or take it a step further and create a special blended fragrance oil or set of wax tarts, coupled with an oil diffuser or tart warmer for a complete gift to scent their space.

For when your next door neighbor unexpectedly gives you a holiday fruit basket

We’ve all been there before - someone thoughtfully gives you a gift that you weren’t expecting, and you feel foolish because you don’t have something to give in return. That is, unless you thought ahead and purchased some candles to keep on hand!

The holidays are full of last-minute gift opportunities: your son’s teacher, your favorite barista, the mailman who is always so kind. We recommend purchasing some of our signature 11oz soy candles, available in 100+ fragrances right off the shelf - including limited edition holiday scents. If you're unsure which scents to gift, our gift packs are curated with four smaller candles in complementary fragrances such as “Winter Bliss” or “Vacation”.  For those of you traveling this season, candles and gift packs fit great in suitcases tucked between clothes.

Everything in our stores is buy three, get the fourth free (mix and match!), so stock up and get a candle or two for everyone on your list!  Don’t live near a store? Order all of our 140+ fragrances as a candle, fragrance oil, reed diffuser and more on our website, and shipping is free over $60.
