We’ve always felt that lighting a candle or creating a custom-scented room spray made us feel relaxed and at ease.  And now, thanks to the new Netflix special “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo”, we know why! Neat-freaks all over the world (real and aspirational) are learning about the KonMari Method™, the lifestyle that is the premise of Japanese organizing consultant Marie Kondo’s bestselling book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.  At the center of the KonMari Method is a simple intention: Choose Joy.

Kondo’s method is as beautiful in its simplicity as it is challenging to implement.  All you have to do is follow the six basic rules of tidying (see below) while asking yourself the question, “does this spark joy?”.  If the answer is no, then it’s time to thank the item for its service and part ways (by donating or recycling it, of course!).  Sounds easy, but as anyone who has ever tried to declutter knows, it’s anything but!

Thankfully, Kondo understands that tidying up can be stressful and overwhelming.  To help combat these feelings, she recommends organizers “imagine their ideal lifestyle” and that they “try and change the air” before getting started.  To do so, she suggests a few different options, including opening a window to let in some fresh air, lighting a candle, and spritzing an aromatic room spray.  Now that’s something we can do!

If you’re finding yourself equally inspired to begin implementing the KonMari Method in your own home, look no further than The Candle Lab!  We’ll help you create your own custom-scented candle or other home fragrance product that will absolutely spark joy - no questions asked!  When you’re ready to start tidying up, simply infuse your space with your new fragrance to clear the air, then begin! We can’t promise it will be easy, but at least it will smell good.

P.S. - if you can’t make it to a store, you can order all of our 140+ fragrances in candle, reed diffuser, wax tart, or other form right on our website and have them delivered to your doorstep.  Talk about sparking joy!

The Six Basic Rules of Tidying, according to the KonMari Method:

  1. Commit yourself to tidying up.
  2. Imagine your ideal lifestyle.
  3. Finish discarding first.
  4. Tidy by category, not by location.
  5. Follow the right order.
  6. Ask yourself if it sparks joy.
