Summer Activities for the Kids

School’s out for summer!

Picture this.  The final bell rings on the last day of school, and the kids rush out of the building and back home.  They throw their backpack down, plop on the couch, and before five minutes have passed, utter the words every parent dreads:  “I’m bored!”. If you are the parent of school-aged children, then this is likely a familiar scene. Summer is a wonderful time, full of hot days spent at the pool and late nights spent riding bikes and catching lightning bugs.  But it’s almost inevitable that there will be at least a day or two that the kids declare that there is “nothing to do!”.

The good news is, since you are reading this post, you’ll be able to tell them - “yes there is!”.  Pouring custom-scented candles is a great activity for kids of all ages. It’s fun, relaxing, creative, and sure to please even the most skeptical of children.  The kids will get to smell candles, making a list of their favorite scents. With the help of our Scent Stylists, they’ll choose 2-3 of those scents, decorate a label, and blend their oils before pouring and stirring their very own candle.

And the fun doesn’t stop there!  The candles take about 90 minutes to set and cool before they can be enjoyed at home, so we’ve put together a list of suggestions for how to spend that time.  All of our stores are located in vibrant communities full of activities to entertain the kids. From educational to recreational and everything in between, you’re bound to have a great summer afternoon!

Grandview: While the candles cool, take the kids to play a round of putt-putt at Galaxy Games & Golf.  Or stay within walking distance of the store and get the kids (and yourself!) an ice cream cone at Jeni’s Ice Cream and walk to the nearby park on Goodale Ave.  And to keep those little minds extra sharp, visit the Grandview Library just around the corner for some air conditioning and quiet time browsing the books!

Short North For your pre-teens and teengaers that want to feel like adults, treat them to a day out on the town in the Short North!  Pour candles, then browse the local shops and galleries before grabbing a bite to eat at one of many local restaurants. Or expand their culinary horizons with a trip to the North Market - the person with the most unusual food find wins!  For your sports fans, make a whole day of it and pour candles when the store opens at 11, then catch an afternoon Clippers baseball game. And for a more low-key afternoon, a simple trip to Jeni’s Ice Cream followed by a walk around Goodale Park is perfect.

Worthington:  Can someone say Pizza Party?!  Pour candles, then grab pizza at Dewey’s Pizza just across the street.  Top it off with an ice cream sundae at Graeter’s Ice Cream or some Peace, Love, and Little Donuts!  For your swimmers, the Worthington Community Pool is just around the corner. And you can never go wrong with a walk around Hartford Park and a trip to the Old Worthington Library.

Anderson Township:  Kids are full of energy, and the Sky Zone Trampoline Park in the same shopping center is the perfect place to let them go crazy!  For days when it is extra hot outside, there is nothing wrong with treating them to a little popcorn and movie time at the movie theater just down the road.

Over-the-Rhine:  Similar to the Short North Arts District of Columbus, Over-the-Rhine (OTR) is a great place to take your slightly older children.  They’ll appreciate the unique vibe of the area and all its shops and interesting food (we recommend the hotdogs at Senate). You can even take them to Findlay Market, where they can explore local produce, meat, bakery, and cheese vendors.  Or simply grab a cold drink at Coffee Emporium and walk around Washington Park

Lawrenceville:  Particularly hot day?  Take the kids to a movie at Row House Cinema, or take them bowling at Arsenal Bowl, both just down the street from the store.  Or if you’ve got more time, the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium is just a short drive away. Candles + Cheetahs make a fun day!

Earth Scents: Tips for Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling your Candles

At The Candle Lab, we try to be aware of the impact we have on our environment, both in our stores and at home.  And while we’re far from perfect, every little bit counts!  We know a lot of you are trying to be a little bit kinder to Mother Nature too, so we asked some of our Scent Stylists for their favorite tips to reduce, reuse, and recycle in their scented lives.

Start with an empty, clean jar.  When your candle has just a little bit of wax left, use a spoon to scrape out the remainder (soy wax is soft), and then use a paper towel (better yet, a cloth) to wipe off the sides.  Wash with hot soapy water and dry, and viola - an empty glass jar!  Read on for creative ideas put into action at home, work, and even in the grocery store:

“Have some empty candle jars and aren’t sure what to do with them?  Bring them back to the store and we’ll give you a $1 credit for each jar towards your purchase.  You don’t even have to clean them out beforehand - let us do the dirty work!  We'll reuse them for testing in our lab and/or recycle them.” - Denise, Director of Retail Operations

At home
"Our jars with twist on lids are so useful!  I reuse our mason and black lid jars for making yogurt parfaits - layer some greek yogurt, fruit, and granola and you've got a snack on the go." - Elise, Assistant Manager, Short North

“Place a few drops of fragrance oil in a reusable warmer or directly in your furnace filter for a scent that fills your space perfectly.” - Valerie, Warehouse Production Team

“Empty jars make the cutest pots for plants!  I use mine to plant succulents and grow herbs like chives and basil.  They are small enough to keep on my kitchen windowsill. If I’m feeling really creative, I’ll even paint the jars!” - Tess, Assistant Manager, Grandview

“When I’m finished with my spa salts, I clean out the jar and then use it for cooking salts.  It looks cute on my kitchen table!” - Lindsay, Director of Operations

“I use mine in the bathroom to hold cotton balls, cotton swabs, and makeup brushes.  Place them on a bathroom tray and your bathroom will feel like one out of a magazine!” - Alex, Scent Stylist, Short North

At the grocery store
“I use my cleaned, empty jars that have a twist-and-seal lid to shop the bulk section of my supermarket.  Simply have the cashier weigh them empty, then fill them up. Saves a bag and you’ll already have your spices and other bulk items in cute containers for your counter - no need to transfer when you get home.” - Danielle, Scent Stylist, Short North

In the car
“Smaller jars are perfect for holding little dog treats!  I keep them in various places around the house and in my car so I can always bribe my dog when I need him to behave” - Elly, Scent Stylist, Short North

At work
“I’m a teacher, and I love using our new jars with etched wooden lids to hold small supplies like push pins, paper clips, and rubber bands.  The kids love the fun designs (bikes, cacti, even sloths!), and I like that everything looks neat and organized.” - Abby, Scent Stylist, Worthington

Take your Spring Cleaning to the Next Level

Picture this.  It’s Saturday afternoon, you’ve spent all day on your knees scrubbing your kitchen floors and getting that soap scum off your shower walls.  You’ve cleaned out your pantry (and found and embarrassing number of items that expired in 2015), wiped shelves you haven’t seen the bottom of in years, and put fresh linens on all the beds.  You’ve even washed your outside windows. Go you!

But before you call it a day and reward yourself with a Netflix marathon, there are a few final steps that will take your clean home to a whole new level.  After all, it’s not enough for your home to look and feel clean - you want it to smell clean too!  Check out our tips below for putting the finishing touches on your spring cleaning:

Make the air smell good
Add a few drops of fragrance oil to your air vents, and the scent will waft through the room.  We recommend scents like Rain and Morning Dew for a fresh, clean smell that isn’t overpowering.

Avoid strong bathroom sprays
You know which ones we’re talking about - those super strong, super chemically smelling sprays that not only don’t help with bathroom smells, they seem to mingle with them and make it worse.  We recommend avoiding those all together and opting for a more gentle approach. Reed diffusers are the perfect solution for small spaces, as they don’t require a flame and slowly release fragrance.  Bonus - they look nice next to your hand soap!

Upgrade your hand soap
Speaking of hand soap, isn’t it time you upgraded from the standard drugstore brand?  Your bathroom is sparkly clean and smells fresh thanks to your reed diffuser, so finish off the experience with some great smelling, high quality hand soap too.  We offer ours in two different scent palettes to please different noses - Lavender Cinnamon and Mango Mint!

Don't be afraid to mix and match scents
If you ask us, there are few things better than a freshly cleaned room with a scented candle lit.  But many people think that you have to use the same scent throughout your home, and you don’t! Try showcasing a few different scents.  Maybe you burn a sweet, tasty scent blend such as Baked Bread, Strawberry Jam, and Vanilla Bean (strawberry shortcake, anyone?) in your kitchen.  You might like your living room a bit more warm and masculine, like Mahogany with Old Books. And in your bedroom? Calm, floral scents like Lavender and Eucalyptus will remind you that it’s time to unwind and relax.

Don’t forget about your car!
Most of us spend at least 30 minutes in the car each day, so why wouldn’t you treat it with some love?  There is nothing worse than stepping into a car that just doesn’t smell good. So make sure that’s never your car by keeping a scented room spray in your glove compartment.  Roll the windows down a little, circulate some fresh air, and spray a pump or two of your favorite custom scent.  Just don’t blame us if you become the designated driver!

Royal Wedding Cake Candle

In case you haven't heard, Prince Harry will officially be off the market soon.  On May 19, he will marry girlfriend Meghan Markle, soon to be Princess Meghan!  Regardless of whether you woke at the crack of dawn to watch Princess Diana marry or weren't even born yet, this royal wedding is something we can all get behind.  And what better way to do that then with a Royal Wedding Cake themed candle?!

The couple announced the details of their wedding cake earlier this week, and by the sounds of it it's anything but traditional!  While it is custom for the bride and groom to serve a fruitcake (yes....a fruitcake), Harry and Meghan are freshening things up a bit.  The lucky guests of the royal wedding will instead get to enjoy a "lemon elderflower cake that will incorporate the bright flavours of spring".  And as is often the case, a cake that tastes good will smell good too!  We recommend blending our Elderflower and Lemongrass scents with Champagne for a citrusy, fresh take, or swap out the Champagne for Cake Batter for a truly wedding cake-like blend.

Stop into any of our stores to "bake" up your Royal Wedding Cake Candle today!
